The hats for Raiders of the Lost Ark were purchased in London from Herbert Johnson hats. Herbert Johnson has changed hands over the years, and they no longer specialize in the hats that made them famous more than 100 years ago. Coyle's has taken on the challenge of recreating the hats as they were back in 1980.

The story was told by Richard Swales, proprietor of Herbert Johnson's hat shop during the time of the filming of Raiders of the Lost Ark, that one day two gentlemen came into the shop looking for hats. After trying on the hats available, Mr. Swales used what was available to come up with a custom design that became the famous Indiana Jones hat. Mr. Swales was not familiar with the two men who visited his shop that day, but later learned their names very well - Stephen Spielberg and Harrison Ford.

Mr. Swales passed away many years ago, so we may never know how much of this story is "creative license" and good old fashioned story-telling, but there is no doubt that he hand-crafted the hats used in the film. Herbert Johnson would provide the hats for "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".
